St. Augustine
I was twenty-three when I arrived in St. Augustine. At that time I was doing line drawings of interesting
historic buildings in St. Augustine. For many years after, I enjoyed the arts and crafts festival which was located downtown in
the park. The artists would set up on the lush grass with their white tents that turned the area into a colorful carnival
of art. I would gravitate to the watercolor artists. Their paintings were full and layered with brilliant colors. They
seemed to love being in St. Augustine and enthusiastically chatted about everything but their paintings. Their work showed the
energy and skill which they aquired. After a couple of years admiring their paintings I decided to get rid of my pen and use my brush.
I love being in St. Augustine and paint what I want. It is truly a pleasure to see the response of art lovers.
Artist
The word artist has always summoned the image of a joyful person that is focused on art and could be equally focused on having a
good time with friends. A person who easily laughs and can also participate in philosophical conversations. Originality defines the artist.
I believe that the artist does not consciously intend originality. The artist paints with skill and feeling and the result is always original.
Being an artist enables me to present images that display my sense of composition and color.
I use basically two brushes to do my work. A one inch flat and a one inch round using Winsor-Newton professional grade watercolor
paint. As an artist, my goal in each painting is to use as little strokes as possible and try not to focus in on details. The wide, relaxed
strokes gives the painting an easy look and enables the viewer to enjoy the various color shapes. The artist will direct the viewers
eye to the point of interest then lead them to an area in the painting where their eye can rest. Then around again to the central area.
I feel that a composition should be as simple as possible.
